Concept Explanation

Area of Trapezium

Area of a Trapezium :

A trapezium is a quadrilateral whose two sides are parallel. In the figure, AB and CD are its two parallel sides while AD and BC are its non-parallel sides.

Base Each of the two parallel sides of a trapezium is called a base of the trapezium.

Area of a trapezium is computed with the following formula:

   Area= frac{1}{2}times(Sum;of;Parallel;sides)times Height

Illustration: The area of a trapezium shaped field is 480 large ^{m^{2}}, the height is 15 m and one of the parallel side is 20 m. Find the other side.

Solution: We have, Area of trapezium ABCD = 480 large ^{m^{2}}

 Rightarrow frac{1}{2}(AB+CD)times AL = 480

Rightarrow frac{1}{2}(20+CD)times 15 = 480

  Rightarrow 20+CD=frac{480times 2}{15}

  20 + CD = 64:  CD = 64 - 20 = 44m
